About 10 PM on this date in 1509, a honker of an earthquake hit on the edge of the Sea of Marmara. It’s estimated at about a 7.2, but it shook the daylights out of Istanbul. A thousand houses and one hundred nine mosques were leveled, and the death toll was put at something like 10 thousand. The Tsunami that followed the earthquake was an additional problem, not to mention 45 days of aftershocks. The survivors of the earthquake, tsunami, aftershocks, starvation, disease and all the other results of such a catastrophe had a particular name for the incident. It’s gone down in Turkish History as “The Lesser Judgment Day.” It’s the birthday of Marie Laveau, the legendary Voodoo Witch Queen of New Orleans. The first Rin-Tin-Tin was born on this day in 1918. and it’s also the birthday for Cynthia Powell of Liverpool, who got pregnant by and then married John Lennon on the eve of Beatlemania.
